The Benefits of Police Scanner Codes

Not all police scanner codes are the same. It varies from department to department and it is therefore important to identify these differences to respond quickly during emergency situations. The concept of using police scanner codes is meant for a speedier response and identification of a given situation during emergency scenarios. These codes represent a broad range of emergency situations including relief operations, road mishap or accidents, tense situations, any forms of threats, among other things.

What are the benefits of using police scanner codes to the entire society? The answer is quite obvious - it facilitates in a more efficient way to guarantee security within a given location where a police department is responsible for. The use of police scanner codes represents actual phrases or words that make it easier to communicate with other people in the department for quick response. But why use codes when it could potentially lead to confusion in memorizing what these police scanner codes are? It is mainly for security reason, which aims to provide leakage of information transferred from the personnel within a given department.

The police scanner codes employ the use of scanners that is able to scan frequencies via this radio receiver. There are two types of frequencies that are detected by the handheld monitoring systems that police use, which are UHF and VHF frequencies. These radios are capable of receiving only one message at any given time but are capable of transmitting various signals simultaneously, though.

In order to maximize the benefits of police scanner codes, it is important to understand what its meanings are. Below is a list of basic codes used and their respective meanings or representations:

Code 2 - Urgent but does not require the use of light and siren

Code 3 - Urgent and requires the use of light and siren

Code 4 - There is no need to provide further assistance

Code 5 - Stakeout

Code 6 - The area must be cleared

Code 7 - Time for meal

Code 8 - Time to go to the restroom

Code 9 - Summer uniform must be used

Code 10 - Pre-call up for SWAT

Code 11 - Call up for SWAT team

Code 37 - Property is wanted

There is also another type of police scanner codes, which is used when police personnel communicate via radio receivers. This is a long list but some of the signals or messages sent through these police scanner codes could mean any of, but not limited to, the following:

? Officer down, all patrols must respond

? Caution

? Reception poor/good

? Potential hazard from a subject

? Vehicle wanted

? Found property

? Suspicious person

? Alarm sounding

? Person is calling for help

? Shooting

? Gun involved

? Bomb threat

? Assume post, etc.

The advent of police scanner codes has made law enforcement a lot simpler, more secure, and highly effective. Hence, it is no wonder why it is still employed today in various departments of the government such as police or fire department, civil action groups, emergency response team, and many other similar types of operations.

How many channels should a police scanner have?

I live in Chicago(very busy with radio activity) and am thimking of buying a police scanner. Looking through whats available on ebay, they go from 18 channel scanners to 400 channels(which are more money). Are the extra channels worth the extra money? Your opinion/knowledge would be appreciated?

A scanner with only 18 channels is probably too old to be of any real use. You need a scanner with at least 100 channels but more importantly you need some of the extras that newer scanners can offer. Things like trunk radio tracking and digital reception. The digital will add a lot to the cost of a scanner but most police departments are either digital already or will be soon. If you can't receive the digital you may as well not buy a scanner. Other traffic, such as fire, public works, aircraft, business bands and the like will be analog for a while yet.

Choosing A Handheld Radio Scanner

There are many types of scanners available that have different options and features. When a person is searching for a handheld radio scanner they will want to select the scanner based on the type of use it will receive the majority of the time.

When choosing a scanner a person will first want to determine what the main purpose will be for the scanner and the location that it will be used. Scanners are available with up to two thousand channels. The receiving range can be from 0. 1-1300Mhz to 0. 5-1300Mhz. Some scanners have a receiving range of 0. 1-2150Mhz. These receiving ranges will be important based on the location that a person will be using the scanner.

A person who is interested in listening to one type of transmission, for instance police and fire departments, in a small town does not need a two thousand channel scanner. However, in a larger town, or for listening in cities that one may travel to more channels will be needed. Some scanners have an alpha numeric display that shows the channel, transmitter, and frequency on a screen. This can be very helpful if a person is listening to several different frequencies on a regular basis.

There are many types of search modes available on scanners. Most scanners come with a pre-programmed service scan that has frequencies for police, fire departments, aircraft, and marine. These frequencies are set by the manufacturer and often do not include some of the frequencies that are relevant in the area where the scanner will be used. However, since the service scan is contained in a single bank on the scanner, one can program important frequencies in a separate bank.

Most scanner have ten banks. A bank is an organizational tool that makes listening to certain departments or topics easier. A person can put channels that are related to the same topic in one bank and with the push of a button access only the channels in that bank.

Most police and fire departments use radio frequencies and channels that are tied together through a trunk system. Some scanner contain trunk tracking. These scanners are able to pick up frequencies and channels being used within the trunk. This feature is not available on all scanners and if it is an option that is desired, a person will want to check to be sure that trunk tracking is included in the scanner.

Talking to a professional who has expertise in the different types of scanners available will be very helpful. This individual will be able to explain in detail the different options and features of any handheld radio scanner that is being considered.
