Component Matrix Switch Create multiple combinations between video source and display units
A combination of video switch and a video splitter, the video matrix switcher is a device that allows multiple video and audio sources to be routed and switched between multiple video displays and speakers. Some or all videos from the sources can be routed to either some or all of the display devices. Since any combination of input can be connected any combination of output, the result is a matrix like pattern of interconnection possibilities, thereby giving the name to the switching device. Available in configurations ranging in sizes as small as 2x2 units to as large as 32x16, these units can also be cascaded to achieve an even greater configuration.
There are several types of these switches available depending upon the type of video they support. Some common models categorized on this basis are component matrix switch, composite matrix, VGA matrix switch, DVI matrix switch , s-video matrix, VGA audio/video matrix s and Cat5 audio video switch. While some of these units use VGA cables for securing connections, other use either Cat5 cables or DVI cables for the same. All these models operate on simple plug and play functionality and do not require any additional software or device drivers for operation. Control is typically done via push buttons in front of the matrix but high end models also use RS232 or Infra red remote control for the same.
An easy to use hardware device for complex configurations, the component matrix is available in standalone desktop versions or in rack mountable units. This model is available in 4x2, 4x4, 6X4 and 8x8 combination and some variants have the option to switch audio along with video. A maximum bandwidth of 325 MHz and video resolutions of 1080p are supported by these devices. The greatest advantage of this device is that it eliminates the need to move around video input and output cables.
Designed to work with video equipment that has proper connections such as Cable and Satellite receivers, Computers, Video Scalers, DVD players, VCRs and so on, these switches also have regulatory approvals from CE and FCC. The LEDs on the front of the Component Matrix Switch indicate the connection status. Due to these features along with the ability to route video and audio from multiple sources to multiple displays in any combination, the video matrix switches are used extensively in entertainment facilities, commercial and business establishments, government, training and surveillance industries.

I Want to use an optical cable to connect my x box 360/ps3 to Surround Sound.Do optical cable quality matter?
Does optical cable quality matter much? Or in all optical cables is quality considered more or less the same? Which optical cable should i buy? I dont know.
Also i only have 1 imput in my surround sond for optical so i will have to use either a signal switcher box or a signal splitter box, I've heard the signal splitter box deteriourates the sound quality is this true? Should i use a signal splitter box or a signal switcher box? Please help me!!!!
Yes you are correct that a (fiber) Optical cable is excellent for sound and picture quality. Esp. Blu-Ray!
A signal splitter will distort some although you most likely will not notice it. A signal switcher box would be used for one or the other input/outputs of your systems (TV/Surround and X-Box/PS3).
The signal switcher is more of a hassle to use versus having a "constantly on" and available signal to the both of them with the signal splitter. Also the signal switcher will distort each channel by itself as much or more than the splitter will.
Let's review: Splitter = Good quality with little distortion. Always on and available for every component w/ less wiring and hassles. Optimum or best quality.
Switcher = Bad or so-so quality. More wiring and more hassles each time it is used for it's application(s). Quality may not be as good as a splitter.
Double check with your local audio/video store and see what they suggest and what is available in your area.

Clarifying The Names - HDMI Switch v.s. Splitters v.s. Matrix v.s. Adapter
The first time I wanted to hook up my Xbxo360, HTPC and Blu-ray player to my old HDTV which had only 1 HDMI port left, I didn't know what device I should be looking for. I know what I want it to do for me, but I don't know how to call it for me to google it. To be honest, I came up with "HDMI hub", which I borrowed from a network hub which could split network signals for multiple computers. I was also thinking of "HDMI adapter" and "HDMI splitter". Unfortunately, none of them were the popular names.
Such a product is actually commonly called an HDMI switch or HDMI switcher. Of course, there is no official name for it, but there are names more commonly used than others by the majority of the users. So knowing the right names help you research them better and find better prices before you decide to buy one.
After reading this article, you will get a much clearer picture of the common names of the many HDMI gadgets and what they do.
1. HDMI Switch, HDMI Switcher, HDMI Selector
They are the names of an HDMI input switch, which receives signals from multiple HD devices, and output to only 1 HDMI port on an HDTV, monitor or projector. This is what you need when you want to hook up all your PS3, BluRay, HD PVR, etc all to a single HDMI port on your HDTV because your HDTV has only 1 port left.
A 3x1 or 3 port HDMI switch receives 3 HDMI signals and outputs to 1 port. So on and so forth.
Although they are also sometimes labeled as "HDMI splitters", they should not be, because they don't split signals but rather they converges signals into 1 port.
2. HDMI Splitter or HDMI Amplifier
In contrast, they are the names of an HDMI output switch, which receives signals from just 1 HD device and outputs to 2 or more HDTVs or monitors. This is what you need when you want to output the same HD signal to 2 or more HDTVs. In a sense, they split or amplify the signals into multiple streams, hence the names.
A 1x2 or 2 port HDMI splitter receives HD signal from 1 device and outputs to 2 screens.
3. HDMI Matrix or HDMI Distributor
They are combining the functions of input and output switches, they receive multiple HD signals and output to multiple displays. They are rarely used by average consumers but more commonly used by electronics stores or exhibition hosts who need to display many screens simultaneously with HD signals coming from several devices.
A 4x2 HDMI matrix receives HD signals from 4 input sources and output to 2 HDTVs.
4. HDMI Adapter or HDMI Converter
These are very general names, which, however, usually mean a much simpler device that connects HDMI port to another video port such as a VGA or DVI port.
An HDMI to DVI adapter means it receives HD signals from an HDMI port and outputs to a DVI port.
