Recording studio monitors are an essential component of a home recording studio. Other components can include a computer system and recording software, microphones, headphones and more. The first thing to decide when investing in new monitors is your budget. Professional, higher end monitors are going to be expensive to purchase. If you have the funds to afford them then by all means get some professional monitors and enjoy the benefits that they provide. However, if you are like most people, finding an inexpensive alternative is preferable. You can usually get some really good quality recording studio monitors that will last you quite a while for several hundred dollars.
Near field monitors are the normal choice for home recording studios. They are designed to be listened to from a short distance of between three to five feet. Mid and far field monitors are larger and more expensive than near field monitors. They also require that the studio has been designed to be acoustically clean and balanced.
There are two different categories of monitor. They can be either passive or active. Passive monitors have to have a separate power amp while active monitors have an amplifier built into their casings. Active monitors are the most popular of these two kinds of recording studio monitors and they are highly recommended. Having to spend the time and money to get a separate power amplifier is both annoying and expensive.
The next thing to look for in a monitor is driver size. You should aim for monitors that have a wide frequency range. The least expensive recording studio monitors are likely to be those with a driver size of around five inches. These monitors do not necessarily emit a substantial amount of bass sound but they will be suitable for small recording jobs. Most professionals recommend an eight inch monitor for superior frequencies and bass sound. Monitor placement is also a good way to pick up additional bass frequencies, so work with the studio space that you have to increase the effectiveness of your mixes.
Overall, to find good monitors you need to find equipment that fits into your budget but still has a decent driver size. However, how your monitors actually sound is of paramount importance. Unlike high fidelity speakers, recording monitors should truthfully reflect what has been recorded without any embellishment. Hearing the quality of the sound is the ultimate test for your recording studio monitors.

Are there differences between Studio Monitors and Home speakers?
When they are of the same calibur, and price range, is there any internal or sound differences between a studio monitor and a general home or bookshelf speaker?
A lot of manufacturers are claiming studio monitor status where it is undeserved. Usually, they are powered these days, but sometimes the engineering is not there. JBL makes excellent studio monitors. The LSR series is incredibly flat and neutral for professional applications, and I have yet to hear any of the standard names you hear of come close to these in sound. They are expensive though, you will be looking at around $5-7K for a full home theater setup.
