Is there a high speed camera fast enough to capture light?
Is there a high-speed camera so fast that if you were to turn on a light switch in a room, whilst taping that room with the camera, you could see the light illuminating the room. Is it possible? Like you could see the light travelling across the walls and such
One cannot see light in transit, it has to either reflect off of or be absorbed by something for it to be seen. Either a photon from the lamp is going to be reflected from the wall and into your camera's pixel, or it isn't.
In order to see, say half the wall illuminated would require a very fast camera. Light travels a little under a foot per nanosecond. So assuming a 10x10X8 foot room with the light on ceiling in the center and a camera against one wall, the photon would have to travel about 6.5ns to reach the wall halfway down, and then an additional 10 ns to reach the camera or 16.5ns to reach your detector. If the shutter was open and then closed 16.5 ns after the light was turned on, you would see the top half of the wall illuminated, and the bottom half in darkness (because the photons reflecting off the top of the wall reach the wall first and get to your camera before the photons that reflect halfway down).
That being said, the shutter speed of the fastest cameras at about 500,000 frames per second, are still 4 orders of magnitude too long in exposure than you would need.
