How to hook up a mic to a speaker?

So I have this weird, stupid project I'm trying to develop and for it I need to hook up a speaker to a microphone so when the mic receives the sound it is immediately reproduced by the speaker. With as little delay as possible. Also the all thing must be self-powered and must have a on/off switch and a volume control. I'm thinking about using an old computer mic and speaker.

You normally can't run a mic right into a speaker, since the mic won't be able to 'drive' the speaker on it's own (unless you're picking up an absurdly loud sound).

So normally you need an amplifier following the mic. However, you might be able to use just a mic and computer speakers (since the computer speakers likely have their own amplifier in them). However, it will depend on the specific mic, the specific speakers and the sounds you're trying to re-play.

If you're not familiar with electronics, then you're best bet would be to just try hooking the output of the mic into the input of the speakers, with the speaker volume low. Then just play some quite sounds while slowly increasing the speaker volume and see (or hear) what happens. Also, you might want to move around a bit while testing it, since there's a chance that the sound will interfere with itself and could end up canceling itself out in certain spots in the room (so if you're in the wrong spot, it might sound like it's not working).
