The free to air system, also known as FTA, is sophisticated satellite technology that allows you to watch television programs with any qualified FTA receiver, such as the SonicView system. With these such systems, a client is required to download an FTA receiver program as well as various support files. Generally, there is no subscription requirement, and the available programming is unencrypted, though a client may have restricted channels based on geography.
Available FTA programming depends on geographic location and the satellite the client chooses to install on their house. With recent advances in technology, HD FTA receivers and programming are also available. These programs are available to some clients from countries on opposite sides of the world, and as many as two hundred satellite and digital channels can be received using the appropriate receiver.
Apart from the FTA receiver program and support files, the client will also need to buy and install a satellite receiver dish on their house. If the client wishes to access the FTA programming available on different satellites, then an antenna motor will be needed to point the dish at multiple satellites, in order to make the most of what is offered by the FTA system.
There are many different FTA systems available for client use along with the SonicView system, including ViewSat, K-Box, and nFusion. There are also various website hosts, such as CoolSat and ViewSat, which offer some of the best satellite receiver programs to prospective clients.
As with any other entertainment programming, there are commercials to interrupt your viewing sporadically, and some of them ask for donations. While it can be frustrating to sit through these disruptions, there is very little difference between the viewing of FTA programming and pay to view (PTV) programming. However, unlike with traditional PTV programming, there are no monthly fees for the client to worry about. The primary costs for the client include the HD FTA receivers program, the support files, the satellite dish for their house, and the dish motor, if the client so chooses to install it. Depending on the client’s desires and location, additional support files may be necessary to correctly run the FTA programming. Technical support programs should be adequate to take care of any technical issues that may arise during use, but many FTA retailers offer additional support if the need reveals itself.
FTA systems are on the rise as PTV programming becomes more expensive to the average household. The cost of the FTA system is a one time issue, while PTV programming requires a monthly fee. Oftentimes, the PTV systems require little money for setup but the client never actually owns the hardware. Conversely, the FTV systems are completely owned by the client, never leased. The FTA systems are a viable option for the discerning client who wishes to experience in-depth visual entertainment with low cost, maintenance, and worry.

I have been told by Direct TV installers that any dish and LNB will work on any satellite signal. You just won't get as good a signal reception as you would using an LNB designed for your particular receiver. And if you try to receive signals from more than one satellite, you will need a dish big enough to capture the signal from multiple satellites.

Fta Satellite Receiver Becomes A Piracy Device
A FTA satellite receiver becomes a "Piracy Device" when it is proven in a U.S. Federal Court that the receiver has no real value or use for "True" Free-To-Air Satellite reception.
As I said in the past, the AZBox and Dreambox have Ethernet capabilities (an Ethernet port) and can be utilized for the internet, when using these receivers you can go to for example youTube, Hulu and IPTV sites. This is perfectly legal. The NFusion can not be used in this fashion. There is only one reason for NFusion IKS technology and that is for "Satellite Piracy."
I mentioned in the past that Dish is going this route through court proceedings and they are going to win.
I have stated that an Australian Court has labelled a NFusion receiver a "Piracy Device" and has no legitimate use in "True" Free-To-Air applications. Apparently a Minnasota Federal District Court agrees, as in the case involving Dish Network versus Gustav Dobos.
Some of the highlights involving the outcome of this case are:

7. Defendant violated federal laws by offering to the public, providing, or otherwise engaging in the traffic of devices, components, and/or technologies that are primarily designed to circumvent and/or defeat Plaintiffs’ Security System and ultimately facilitate the unauthorized reception of Plaintiffs’ encrypted satellite signals and copyrighted DISH Network Programming.
Such devices, components and/or technologies include: firmware and software designed or used for piracy in connection with FTA receivers, Internet Key Sharing, Control Word Sharing, distribution of data or code for use in piracy, and nFusion-branded FTA receivers.
Defendant acknowledges and admits that each of the foregoing was primarily designed, marketed and used to facilitate piracy of satellite television programming.

(ii) has only a limited commercially significant purpose or use other than to circumvent Plaintiffs’ Security System, including the encryption and access control protection contained in the software on DISH Network Access Cards, or any other technological measure adopted by Plaintiffs that effectively controls access to copyrighted television programming on the DISH Network platform;
What it says is this receiver was primarily made to steal Dish Networks encrypted programming and aid others in satellite TV piracy by viewing D*sh's signals un-encripted via IKS technology, it further goes on and says the NFusion receiver has a limited significant purpose other than to circumvent Dish Networks security features. The defendant (Dobos) agrees.
This Court also ordered a judgment in favor of DISH Network L.L.C (E*hoStar Technologies L.L.C. and N*graStar LLC) on each of the Plaintiffs’ claims and for breach of contract (Counts 1-5 in Plaintiffs’ Complaint) in the aggregate amount of Twenty Million Dollars ($ 20,000,000.00). And, should this defendant breach any part of this Final Judgment or Permanent Injunction, he shall be subject to damages in the amount of $110,000 for each such breach or violation.
So there is it, the NFusion branded boxes are not "True" FTA receivers, they are nothing more than "Piracy Devices" as per a Federal Courts decision. Dish Network has been fighting for this for quite awhile and it finally got it. The $20 million is just a bonus.
